Smallpox Preparedness: Considerations for Response Team Volunteers Webcast

State public health departments are working with local public health departments and hospitals to further develop their smallpox response plans, which include identifying healthcare workers and public health first responders to serve on Smallpox Response Teams. Pre-event vaccination of these Smallpox Response Teams will allow them to better protect the American public against smallpox attack. People who volunteer to receive the smallpox vaccine need to know 1) the conditions that increase the risk of a serious complication and how to assess if they should not be immunized, 2) instructions for caring for the smallpox vaccination site to avoid transmission of the vaccine virus to themselves or others, especially family or household members.
